You will never be short of things to do in Shropshire during your stay at The Castle Hotel. The entire area surrounding The Castle Hotel is designed an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and it is fast becoming a renowned as a centre for outdoor activities.
You are spoilt for choice for things to do near Bishops Castle, including characterful towns, ancient castles and bountiful gardens.
Shrewsbury is about half an hour away, and has been called England’s finest Tudor town. Famous for its “black and white” buildings, there are no less than 660 listed buildings in the town. The museum houses artefacts from the nearby Roman city of Wroxeter, and the town also has a superb Abbey and excellent shopping facilities. You may also choose to relax in beautiful Quarry Park, where the famous Shrewsbury Flower Show is held, or take a boat trip on the River Severn.
Ludlow is a similar distance, famous for its fine food, glorious architecture, and independent shops. There is fine Castle too. The town is frequently named as one of Britain’s best-preserved medieval town.
There are several National Trust properties nearby, including Powis Castle and Attingham Hall. Both offer a full day out in themselves, and the gardens at Powis Castle are world famous.
The Ironbridge Gorge is an easy drive, where the industrial revolution was started, and it is now a World Heritage Site. There are ten museums, including Blists Hill, an entire Victorian town recreated complete with a pub, Victorian sweet shops and a working foundry. The Coalport China Museum is also located here.
Other places for a day out include small towns like Montgomery and Church Stretton, or for more dramatic scenery motor over to Snowdonia and ascend Mount Snowdon on foot, or by the famous narrow-gauge railway.
We also have a large number of illustrated local circular walks available from the hotel reception, ranging from under an hour, to a full day walk.
Walks on the Long Mynd and over to the Stiperstones are a must for the more hardy of walkers. For anyone looking for a more leisurely stroll take an amble up Carding Mill Valley in nearby Church Stretton. Owned by the National Trust you will be rewarded with glorious and panoramic views.

Every year in June Bishops Castle hosts its annual Bishops Castle Walking Festival. This is a “Guided 3 Day Walking Festival in the Shropshire and the Mid-Wales Hills.” It is run by experienced volunteers and is one of the leading small Walking Festivals in the country.
